About the New Head of School/Principal

May 31, 2019
Dear Friends,
Earlier this month, I wrote with a comprehensive update regarding the future direction of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School. At that time, I indicated that solidifying school administration with seasoned education professionals who embrace our mission and identity is a top priority. I also promised an update on the status of our search for the next Headmaster and indicated that we would begin the search for our next Head of School after filling the open Headmaster position.
Our recently concluded Headmaster search and selection process was national in scope and rigorous in nature. During that time, multiple highly qualified candidates surfaced. The quality of the candidates gave rise to the concept of combining the roles of Head of School and Headmaster into one position with the title Principal/Head of School should the ideal school leader be identified. The Board of Trustees gave assent to this idea, which is in line with current measures to right size not only faculty and staff, but also administration in order to best serve the needs of our current student population and their families.
Today, it gives me great joy to share with you that just such an ideal candidate was found and received the unanimous endorsement of the Board to serve Bishop Eustace in the dual capacity of Principal and Head of School. Please join me in extending a warm and prayerful Crusader welcome to Dr. Julie D. Shively as she joins our family in that role.
Dr. Shively comes to us with an impressive career spanning over 20 years as a classroom instructor in grades K-12 in various subject disciplines and an administrator. Most recently, she served as the Principal of Saint Mary’s Springs Middle School/High School Academy in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
She is an innovative and dynamic leader who has consistently developed and implemented initiatives aimed at maximizing student achievement at all levels of ability. She has also worked tirelessly to provide educators under her supervision with authentic professional development programs based on data and best practices that enable them to connect with diverse student populations.
In addition to her experience at various classroom and administrative levels in Catholic and public schools, Dr. Shively spent time as a Teaching Ambassador Fellow with the United States Department of Education (US-ED). In that role, she provided critical consultation and advisement to educational policy makers at the federal level.
Prior to her time in education, Dr. Shively honed her leadership skills in the United States Air Force (USAF). A graduate of the Air Force Academy, she served as a full-time active duty officer for nearly a decade and was one of 276 female pilots in the USAF. While on active duty, she was deployed multiple times and was selected to pilot numerous highly sensitive missions.
In addition to her Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Air Force Academy, Dr. Shively earned her Doctorate in Education Policy from Vanderbilt University; a Master of Educational Leadership Degree from Georgia Southern University; an Educational Specialist Degree in Middle Grades Math and Science from Brenau University; and a Master of Teaching Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Shively’s passion for our Catholic identity, combined with her accreditations, qualifications, and proven leadership experience, made her the ideal choice to lead Bishop Eustace forward.
In her dual role as Principal and Head of School, Dr. Shively will report to the Board of Trustees and to me in my role as Chairman. In order to give you a more comprehensive understanding of her remarkable skill set and professional accomplishments, I am attaching a copy of Dr. Shively’s curriculum vitae for your information.
Our Interim Head of School, Dr. Leonard Fitts, will remain on campus for a portion of the summer to assist Dr. Shively during the transitional period. In order to provide her with adequate administrative support, we are actively searching for a highly qualified Assistant Principal. That individual will be in place prior to the start of the new school year and will report directly to the Principal/Head of School.
Dr. Shively is already hard at work and I know many of you will be eager to meet her as soon as possible. She will be with us by early July after relocating from Wisconsin and introduced to the administration, faculty, staff, and students as soon as practicable. Dedicated opportunities will also be made available for meetings with our parents, alumni, and benefactors.
Again, please join me in extending congratulations and prayerful best wishes to Dr. Shively as she assumes her duties in service to Bishop Eustace. I look forward to working with her in support of our mission.
Mary, Queen of the Apostles, Pray for Us!
Sincerely in Christ Jesus,
Very Reverend Peter T. Sticco, SAC
Chairman, Bishop Eustace Preparatory School Board of Trustees
