Born in Rome in 1795, the
son of a prosperous grocer, Vincent developed a special devotion
to the Blessed Virgin and an intense devotion for the poor. He
attempted to revive artisan guilds by establishing schools for
the young workers and farm boys. The Romans referred to him as
the second Phillip Neri. In 1835, he founded the Pallottine priests
and brothers, and later, the sisters (the Society of the Catholic
Apostolate). Pius called him a forerunner of Catholic Action.
He was beautified and canonized in January 20, 1963, by Pope
John XXIII. He was declared a Patron Saint of Catholic Action
by Pope Paul VI. The Pallottine Order grew through his teachings
and philosophy. The priests and brothers have carried his apostolate
to Bishop Eustace Prep in the South Jersey area.
St. Vincent Pallotti believed
that the love of Jesus should be our guiding force in all things
we do as shown in his words, "Caritas Christi Urgeant Nos" (The love of
Christ urges us on). |
