The English curriculum is a traditional program with an emphasis on critical thinking, literary interpretation, public speaking and writing skills. During the first three years, the department exposes students to an introductory study of various literary genres (9th grade), American Literature (10thgrade) and British Literature (11th grade). In the 12th grade, students choose from World Literature, World Literature with Film, or World Literature with Creative Writing. The department offers elective courses (American Theater, American Poetry and Journalism) to juniors and seniors. Electives must be taken in conjunction with the regular English classes. Description

Journalism/Mass Media is a full year elective course designed for juniors and seniors. The course explores the fundamentals of print journalism; among them newspaper writing; newspaper layout and newspaper production. As an extension of the course work, students will plan, write and produce the school newspaper. (Other students in the school may act as “free-lance” writers and submit articles to the school newspaper.) The workings of the electronic media will also be covered in the course - specifically radio and television writing and production. Among the other topics addressed will be the communications process and the role of the electronic media in today’s society. This course does not replace the required English courses for juniors and seniors.
